The Microbiome - The World Living Inside Us

If I told you there's a system in the body that affects digestion, mood, skin, sleep, immunity and even how much we crave sweets — you'd probably want to know what it is.

The microbiome is a vast population of microorganisms — bacteria, fungi and viruses that live primarily in our gut. We're talking about trillions of tiny creatures working for us around the clock. When we talk about probiotics, we're actually talking about the good bacteria — those that assist digestion, produce vitamins, support the immune system and even influence the production of hormones like serotonin that affects our mood. We usually don't know they're there — until something goes out of balance.

What Happens When We Don't Nourish the Microbiome?

When the microbiome doesn't get what it needs — real food, fiber and variety — it weakens. The good bacteria diminish, and the less good bacteria take over. Then come the consequences: bloating, gas, changes in elimination, fatigue, problematic skin, food sensitivities that weren't there before, unstable moods, low immunity and various other symptoms.

Many problems we've gotten used to accepting as "normal" aren't normal at all. They're simply a sign that the gut is asking for attention, and that our nutrition overall is asking for change.

How to Nourish the Microbiome?

The good news is that significant change is possible through simple, natural means. Two of my favorite ways:

Homemade yogurt — not the yogurt from the supermarket. Homemade yogurt made ourselves is full of live, active probiotics, without additives, without sugar, without preservatives. It nourishes the good bacteria and helps rebuild a healthy population in the gut.

I made a short reel showing exactly how to make homemade yogurt - watch here

Fermented cabbage — fermented food is one of the most powerful things you can give your gut. Cabbage, salt and time is all you need to create rich, diverse natural probiotics. There's a wonderful variety of vegetables that can be fermented and incorporated into our diet.

The Smallest Investment with the Biggest Return

Nurturing the microbiome doesn't require expensive supplements or dramatic life changes. It starts with a spoonful of homemade yogurt in the morning, with real unprocessed food, and with listening to what the body is saying.

When our gut is balanced, we feel it everywhere: in energy, in skin, in mood, and in how our body functions.

Start with one small thing. The body will know how to say thank you.
